What causes acne?

Several factors contribute towards the formation of Acne lesions. It is not really well understood why a switch is turned ON at puberty in both males and females to cause acne but in most cases acne appears to be switched OFF in a similar mysterious fashion.

What is well known is the fact that people who have acne also have a very high rate of sebum(oil) production on to the surface of their skin.

Sebum production is controlled by the male hormone testosterone which is produced by the gonads in men and the ovaries and adrenal glands in women.

The increased sebum excretion is due to an over sensitivity of the sebaceous glands which produce the sebum, to the hormone Testosterone and other androgenic substances.
